About Kyoto
Kyoto is the most popular, must-see location in Japan. As the former imperial capital of Japan, it embodies more than 1,200 years of Japanese history and tradition. Kyoto is home to beautiful imperial villas, 1,681 Buddhist temples and 812 Shinto shrines-including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites-and over 200 museums, which dot the entire city of 10km2. Today, the city of Kyoto is also a bustling academic center that is young-at-heart, with nearly 50 institutions of higher education, and a home to many world-class corporate research giants.
